Definitions/comments: few contacts: people who meet socially with friends, relatives or work colleagues once a month or less often; no-one to confide in: people who don’t have anyone with whom they can discuss intimate and personal matters.

Question wording: ‘Using this card, how often do you meet socially with friends, relatives or work colleagues?’; answer categories: ‘never’, ‘less than once a month’, ‘once a month’, ‘several times a month’, ‘once a week’, ‘several times a week’, ‘every day’. ‘Do you have anyone with whom you can discuss intimate and personal matters?’; answer categories: ‘yes’, ‘no’.
