Working conditions by country 1997 and 2005

Definitions/comments: Satisfaction at work: index from 0 (no satisfaction) to 100 (max. satisfaction) based on various questions about satisfaction with work income, opportunities for advancement, interest in work, relations with colleagues and with managers. Employment security: index from 0 (no security) to 100 (max. security) based on various questions about employment security and unemployment risk.

Question wording: Satisfaction at work: ‘My income is high’, ‘My opportunities for advancement are high’, ‘My job is interesting’, ‘In general, how would you describe relations at your workplace… between management and employees? … between workmates/ colleagues?’. Employment security: ‘My job is secure’, ‘All in all, how lickely is it that you will try to find a job with another firm or or-ganization within the next 12 months?’, ‘To what extent, if at all, do you worry about the possibility of losing your job?’

Sample size: ISSP: 1011–2518 (1997), 913–1701 (2005); weighted data, employed persons only.
